Committed to Excellence in the Aftercare
of Thoroughbred Racehorses

About Us

Mission

The Virginia Thoroughbred Project, Inc. 501(c)(3) is dedicated to excellence in Thoroughbred aftercare, advocating for the versatility and capabilities of Thoroughbreds, and ensuring their responsible transition to life after racing.

Vision

VTP’s vision encompasses the education and promotion of responsible ownership throughout the entirety of a Thoroughbred’s life, instilling a deep appreciation for the breed. This includes supporting second riding careers and participating in educational and therapeutic programs.

Goals

  • Provide responsible retraining for a suitable second career and adoption to a compatible lifelong home.
  • If a riding career is not an option, then adoption to a suitable companion home, or life as one of our sanctuary residents.
  • Provide rehabilitation for injuries with as much time needed prior to any retraining.
  • Giving back to the community by sharing our facility and horses in educational programs with local at-risk youth and adults.
  • Educating the public on responsible horse care.

Community

Located on the historic grounds of James Madison’s Montpelier, the Virginia Thoroughbred Project, Inc. (VTP) is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. VTP cares for many horses whose racing careers were prematurely ended by injury, as well as others who did not meet the rigorous demands of the sport. VTP is committed to providing these magnificent animals with a life of tranquility for as long as they are comfortably able to enjoy it. VTP also rehabilitates, trains and offers some horses for adoption that are suited for future careers.

Connections

We offer educational enrichment opportunities to local youth and community members to learn the importance of being a steward of care, respect, and growth through responsible horsemanship. We look forward to expanding our educational offerings to local youth through the Boys & Girls Club of America and Virginia community programs.

Therapeutic Programs

VTP provides a healing space for U.S. Veterans. VTP is a crucial resource, where people help horses and horses inspire healing in those who need it most. We feel honored to work with the Wounded Warrior Project while expanding our therapeutic offerings.

Our mission is two-fold, deliver unparalleled aftercare for Thoroughbred horses in Virginia while serving as a vital resource for our community members who gain a whole new perspective when interacting with these special horses.

We invite you to support our cause and help us continue this essential work by donating today.

Our Horses

Part of the mission of the VTP is to assess the possibility of the rehabilitation and adoption of some horses for whom a second career might be possible. These horses are usually younger and without limiting injuries. Once at VTP, horses are evaluated, cared for and trained by professional staff and considered for use as a pleasure horse, dressage, jumper or eventing prospect. Other horses that are not suitable for retraining may be offered for adoption or fostering as companion animals.

Horses are available for sponsorship and some, for adoption. If you’d like more information, please contact us.

Click on the horses’ photos or names below to learn more about them! And be sure to check back often for additions and updates.

Farm

Farm

Currently, VTP has over 30 horses on 150 beautiful rolling acres at James Madison’s Montpelier near Orange, Virginia. Every horse is well cared for and checked daily by our professional equine farm manager. Regular veterinary, farrier, and dental care are provided whenever necessary.

Visiting

If you wish to visit we ask that you call us first so that we can make certain that our farm manager or a board member is there to assist you and answer your questions. At present, the main gate at the Montpelier estate is open Thursday through Monday so keep in mind that we can only make appointments on those days.

Background

When the farm was initially established at Montpelier in November of 2003 it was one of many farms managed by a large, national rescue for off the track Thoroughbred horses. It continued under the auspices of this organization until December of 2019 when it separated from this group and became the Virginia Thoroughbred Project, an independent entity dedicated to the care of Thoroughbred horses specifically in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

In March of 2020 VTP was granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS, thus enabling donors to make financial contributions that may be exempt from taxes. In April of 2021 we became eligible to file an application for accreditation with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) based in Kentucky, a national organization affiliated with The Jockey Club, that sets the standard for the highest level of acceptable care of Thoroughbred horses in the country. In November that year, VTP earned its accreditation along with 28 other organizations, click here for more information.
