Boys & Girls Club Program at VTP Gives Kids a Summer to Remember

AUGUST 4, 2023 – It’s been a fantastic summer of learning and fun for the Boys & Girls Club of Orange, Virginia who participated in our new outreach program with the group. Connecting our horses (and other creatures!) with local youth has been enriching and fulfilling.

Most recently, we were able to give the club kids the exciting opportunity to ride former racehorses. On Tuesday, July 18, our friends Oliver Brown, Rachel Dillon, Alexandra Gilbertson, and Izzy brought over Opi, Happy, Sunny, and TJ. The smiles on the kids’ faces as they sat tall in the saddle while being led in the ring is a sight we’ll always treasure.

Besides time on horseback, the kids learned about the differences and similarities between Warmblood and Thoroughbred horses. It was an educational and eye-opening experience that deepened their understanding and appreciation for these magnificent creatures. TJ and Opie showed off their jumping skills, leaving everyone in awe, and perhaps inspiring dreams and igniting a passion for horses in the process.

In June, Earthquest gave the kids a captivating demonstration featuring their rescued birds of prey, and veterinarian Dr. Jennifer LaPlume provided a day of hands-on equine health education.

The Virginia Thoroughbred Project extends its heartfelt thanks to all who have made our educational program with the Boys and Girls Club of Orange, Virginia possible. It’s a joy and an honor to share our Thoroughbreds with the community.
